Italia: Perugia and Assisi

Day two. We woke up ready to go. Good thing, because we had a full day ahead of us. Perugia and Assisi are not terribly far from our hotel, nor are they too far from each other. Neither one is very big. Still, they are two cities filled with things to see and do and we wanted to take in as much as possible.

Our views from our hotel
Perugia was the first stop, and we had to park outside and take the Mini Metro into the city. When we got to the lot, we saw that there was a little market to explore. How fun! The best part? Seeing our brothers and sisters doing public witnessing. Of course, we hugged and we talked. One couple there was also visiting, but they were from Denmark. In Italy to help in the English territory in Italy.

We took the Mini Metro into the city and headed to the Piazza IV Novembre. It truly is amazing to think about how old and historic these cities are. People live here; they see this every day! Our hotel told us about Testone, a small little sandwich shop known for the Torta al Testo sandwich. Ours was prosciutto and Mozzarella. The sandwich came with a beer as well. Meg and I shared it because it was big enough that we could, so a meal for two people with a beer was 6 Euro. Well worth it if the price was more, as it was fantastic.

In Perugia is what is called the Rocca Paulina. It's a sort-of underground city with a complex history. Perugia was conquered by the Pope, who then showed his strength by destroying much of what was Perugia and building his own fortress. It now lies under modern day Perugia. We did our best to understand the history from a girl that worked at the galleria inside.

Perugia has a lot of unique things to find in the city, like a street that was once an aqueduct. Now, it's a small pedestrian street with homes on both sides. Keep exploring, climbing the many steps of Perugia, and the city will reward you with a spectacular view.

And, of course, no trip to Perugia is complete without having a true, authentic Pizza Cone! Haha. In our defense, Italians were ordering them, too!

On to Assisi, a small walled city that we spent the rest of the day into the night exploring. In assisi, there are tons of old churches, so much of the stores and areas are filled with religious things. It was later in the day, so most all of the churches were closed. By far, the most impressive one that we saw was the Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi. Just a huge, beautiful building from the 12th century that is still used today. We really liked it, and I would have liked to see inside.

No Student vacation is complete without a face in a hole

Good night Italy, see you tomorrow.
